"I'm in love with Mulder. I have a lot of respect for the character and wouldn't allow him to do certain things that I didn't think were integral to the character. From outside in, he's kind of a questing hero, he's on a quest. When you talk about his relation with Scully and other things that are tangential to that quest, you have to come back with Mulder to the quest. He can't become something else, that's what he is."
